WHAT IS HOSTING
Each site on the web is located on a computer
somewhere in the world. This computer is connected to the Internet. This allows a person to find, view and interact
with your website. The computers used to house Internet websites are called hosts. They differ from your computer
in your home or office in that they are connected to the net by fiber optic cable which is "live" 24
hours a day. Most internet browsers are just that, browsers. They occasionally browse through different sites deriving
information from them. They are not connected all the time.
Another difference is the operating system used on these hosting computers. The fastest ones use Unix or a derivative
of it such as Linux or Sun. These operating systems were designed to handle a large number of simultaneous users
with no noticeable slowdown
under load. Some websites receive millions visitors a week with thousands of simultaneous viewers.
In comparison, Windows was designed to handle up to 5 or 6 simultaneous users and with that much load, it slows
down noticeably if the users are accessing data, not just sitting there with something on the screen. Websites
consist of many graphic files
and text in the form of html files. Visitors rarely just sit there and view a screen for a long time. Windows NT
or 2000 (which is NT renamed), although better than Windows 95 or 98, just simply cannot handle heavy loads as
well as a Unix machine.
The downside of Unix is that its interface is not graphical and most computer literate users are afraid of it because
of its unfamiliar text based screens. Fortunately, there are many hosting companies with Unix technicians on staff
ready and willing to host your
website. Some of these companies do not even charge for this service. They derive their income from an advertising
banner placed on your website.
The Internet consists of trunk lines connecting city to city and country to country. The lines are the telephone
lines which allow you to talk to your cousin in Maine or your brother in California, They connect everyone with
a telephone to everyone else with a
telephone. In this case, they are used to transmit data as well as verbal communications. All trunk lines are not
the same. They differ in speed and this speed translates directly into how much load any trunk line can handle.
Some typical speeds are: 1.5 Mbps, 10Mbps, 45Mbps, 115Mbps, 2 Gbps. Mbps means mega (million) bits per second and
Gbps means giga (billion) bits per second. Websites hosted on computers connected to faster trunk lines can handle
more load (visitors) than those connected to slower trunks without noticeable slowdown.

After you have a host, you can "upload" or put your
website on that computer. When that is done, you are available for any Internet enabled person to come to your
website. Having a website is a particularly good feeling. It quickly becomes an extension of you or your company
you won't want to do without. Imagine yourself living in a building with many windows but all are covered letting
in no light. You live and work in this space using interior lighting only. Now, you remove those window coverings
and suddenly, you can see the outside world and the outside world can see you. This changes your life in many ways.
