Don't let this one scare you off we
know how to handle all of this for you...

Search engine submission is the least expensive internet advertising method and probably has the highest payback.

The problem with search engines is that most have strict requirements for submitting your site.

You are only allowed to submit once
and it can take up to 6 weeks before
you are listed if they decide to accept
your site.

Some won't list you if your site is made
with frames.

Some won't list if they don't like your
website's colors.

They think you are trying to hide
something if your text is too close to
your background color.

Some require meta tags to describe and
categorize your site and others ignore
them in favor of using your text.

If your text is in graphic form,
you don't get listed.

In all cases, any keyword or category you would like your site listed under, MUST have corresponding text on the page. In other words, your site must be about what you say it's about. Keywords should also exist in your website's headlines and links. Reciprocal banner exchanges are good if you can control the relevancy of the exchange. It probably won't help your site to advertise pornography if you are selling educational materials to high school teachers.

Buying search engine keywords is really good, and also really expensive. This process is where you buy a keyword, relating to your business or information.

For example, if you sell bicycles and you buy the keyword "bicycle", whenever someone uses that search engine and includes "bicycle" in the search words, your banner will be displayed. (Search for "books" on almost any search engine and you will see an Amazon Books banner.)

How to pick the best
search engine keywords

The cost of a keyword varies and some of them are auctioned off. The prices though are always based on the number of clicks the banner gets. This means that you are only paying for visitors who got to your site by clicking on your banner. You can expect to pay from $40 /thousand clicks to $100 /thousand clicks for keywords. Search engines have a nasty habit of listing a site then dropping it a few weeks later.

This has spawned a promotional scheme offered by some hosting services. They will submit your site to hundreds search engines every month. This might sound like a good idea, but all it will do is get you banned from almost all the search engines. What you or someone like us needs to do is search for your site on each of the top engines periodically and re-submit if you have been dropped. And, the re-submission cannot occur more often than every 6 weeks. We provide this service and report your position on the engines who are listing
your site for a very reasonable price.

Many search engines will not list your site if it is hosted on a free hosting
service like Geocities, Angelfire, Freeyellow, Xoom (NBCi), Tripod, etc.
Most list "dot coms" higher than non-dot coms. A "dot com" is an Internet
name followed by .com, .org, .net etc. (yourname.com).

How do you know all this?
Can I verify it for myself?

The Counter is a free website counter for those sites who are not hosted on cgi enabled services. They provide statistics for over 230,000 sites. They have a really good overall statistics page. Taking time to review the top 100 sites in a given category will provide insight into just what it is that puts a site in the top 100. Time spent here can really pay off.

Sites we host get free weekly statistics emailed to them. Although thecounter.com has a good service, it takes extra time when a visitor comes to your site and it only tracks the first page. We provide information on every page, where the visitor came from, what country, who the visitors are, and more - all with no slowdown.
